Meru Museum Kenya: Meru is a city in the central Kenya, the sixth largest city in Kenya, it functions as the headquarters of Meru County. Meru is a home to the Meru Museum which was opened in May 1976, this was foundation of the museum was joint effort by the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) and the Meru  Municipal and County Councils. The Meru museum is a safari destination primarily designed to meet the needs of the district residents and visitors. To this end it has exhibits of general interest including the prehistory, cultural history and natural sciences which has also become a tourism destination in Kenya.

Meru Museum is a museum located in Meru, Kenya. Its exhibits focus on the cultural history and practices of the Meru people. The museum building was built in 1916, and was used as the district Commissioner Office, and is the oldest stone building in Meru. In 1973, the National Museums of Kenya made an agreement to renovate the structure into a local museum. The museum first opened in 1974, the National Museums of Kenya along with the Meru County and Municipal Council completed the renovations of the museum structure, the objective with the creation of this museum was to have a space that would be about the local history of this region of Kenya, in the same year George Kirigia was assigned as the museum’s curator.

Meru museum contains various historical artefacts of the Meru culture that is the museum contains exhibits on the stone tools dating from the prehistoric period and taxidermies animals. The Meru Museum is such an amazing  tourism Kenya safari destination, in that the main museum gallery is composed of three main sections, dedicated to the history of the Meru culture containing ethnographic objects, human evolution and the natural history of the area of Kenya where the museum is located.

Meru museum also has exhibits that focus on the development of different techniques in Kenyan agriculture, in the cultural section the museum has several exhibits of the traditional clothing, tools and weapons, including the arrows, bows, grindstones and spears. The Meru museum contains a fishing pond, and exhibits on small mammals, birds and reptiles from this area of Kenya. The museum also contains exhibits on the dinosaurs, in addition the museum contains a statue of Living Mugwe, a learder of the Meru people, aspects of the cultural and diverse history of the Meru people are well illustrated by the numerous displays. Two rather unusual amenities of the Meru Museum are a garden of the indigenous medicinal shrubs and herbs together with a theater, a compound of the traditional huts has been constructed on the grounds, which are included in safari of the museum. An outdoor platform for dancing and musical programs along with sales kiosks complete the exterior construction.

The exhibitions serve largely in the stimulating particularly among the young generation awareness of and appreciation for their cultural heritage and that of other communities as well as serving as an introduction to the region for the visitors.
